lunch time story 2.15-3.15pm

The teacher > Roxane Butterfly is known to write her life with the same free form characters as in her dance. From flamenco, to free jazz via Arabic music, classical and electronica…. her dancing feet have sung songs that only the dariest of the daring have ventured into…And she did this with some of the best musicians in the world including George Benson, Ron Carter, Benny Powell, Aldo Romano, Stanley Jordan and so many more…

While being a world renowned tap dance adventurer and a true icon of the underground New York Tap scene, the french born hoofer has always made a point in reflecting about the virtue of tap dance as an empowering medium to approach social issues such as gender, race, and disability. For her, improvisation is a trustful road that erases all sense of hierachy while requesting a very basic, yet often lost, skill : Listening to one another.

Her methodology has inspired many tap practionners across Europe, the Americas and Japan where her presence manifests in the multi=faceted work of the younger generations. Her path as a charismatic woman, mother and artist has led her to appear in the corporate-world as a lecturer on leadership such as the Applied Improvisation Network World Conference 2018 in Paris.

All classes focus on the importance of leadership as a band leader, choreographer, teacher, interpreter, and highlight the various moments in jazz music that have been revolutionary to the growth of the art form.

All levels are welcome to attend, from intermediate to professional. Teaching is not focused on technicality but students must be fluent already with the jazz tap language.

This workshop concludes Roxane´s 12 years presence on the Barcelona tap landscape, where the avant-garde globe tapper was able to run her own space, the Jimmy Slyde Institute (J.S.I) and come up with her unique methodology on improvisation.
