Inclusion calls for transformation \u2013 for a paradigm shift in the philosophy and practice of education \u2013 away from a \u201cone-size fits all\u201d approach.<\/p>\n<p>Despite significant progress in making education inclusive in the last decade, deep disparities remain. Millions of children and youth are still denied their right to education. Poverty, geographical location, gender, language, disability, ethnicity, migration or displacement status continue to dictate and limit education opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0009\/000984\/098427eo.pdf\">Salamanca Statement<\/a>\u00a0adopted and widely endorsed at the World Conference organized by UNESCO and the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain in Salamanca, Spain in 1994 established the fundamental principle of inclusion at school: \u201cAll children should learn together, wherever possible, regardless of any difficulties or differences they may have. Inclusive schools must recognize and respond to the diverse needs of their students\u201d. Participants at Salamanca considered the fundamental policy shifts required to promote inclusive education, namely ensuring that schools serve all children, particularly those defined as having special educational needs.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the concept of inclusion has broadened, emphasizing the need to reach\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0learners, under the assumption that every learner matters equally and has the right to receive relevant, equitable and effective educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item fadein\">\n<div id=\"concept-note\" class=\"paragraph-simple paragraph paragraph--type--document paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"document-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"document-infos\">\n<div class=\"document-texts\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-title field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March has been quite a spectacular\u00a0 month to highlight inclusion and inclusive education !
