JIMMY SLYDE INSTITUTE
BARCELONA
JIMMY SLYDE INSTITUTE (JSI) was a space founded in 2012 by choreographer Roxane Butterfly in the Raval district of Barcelona. One of the few remaining heir of hoofing master Jimmy Slyde, Roxane came up with a methodology designed to recreate the privileged one-on-one environment in which the tap dance culture was originally transmitted. JSI tap training mainly focused on tap history, technique, composition, choreography, tap standards, musicality, investigation and improvisation. Students could widen their understanding of tap, not only as a technical practice, but as jazz culture. Roxane has now imported her methodology to Paris after she closed JSI in 2018.
